An honest look at automated water testing

Verified retail prices · full delivered cost · last verified June 6, 2026

If you’re considering automated testing, you’re already making a smart move — consistent data beats sporadic manual tests, whichever device you choose. And honestly, the hobby is lucky: Neptune, Focustronic, Kamoer and CoralVue have all pushed this category forward, and each builds genuinely good equipment with loyal communities behind it.

So this comparison isn’t about a winner. It’s about something that’s easy to miss when shopping: list prices aren’t the same as what you’ll actually spend. Some devices need a controller to run. Some prices don’t include the import charges due at your door. Some need their own brand of reagents on a recurring schedule. None of that is wrong — it’s just part of each system’s design, and it belongs in the math.

That’s what the chart below shows: the full, delivered, ready-to-test cost of each setup, side by side. On that basis, all of these systems — ours included — land in a similar bracket: roughly $1,000–2,000 to get running. We’re not the cheapest sticker on the page, and we won’t pretend to be.

Where the systems genuinely differ is philosophy

Neptune Trident

Built for tight integration — on an Apex it tests fast and doses automatically off the results. That integration is the point, and it’s excellent at it; the Apex is part of the package, so it’s part of the price.

Focustronic Mastertronic

A well-regarded standalone tester with a strong community — at its current sale price, the most affordable way into automated testing of the core five parameters.

Kamoer Reef Master SPA

Impressive engineering in one unit, with low per-test reagent costs — and their new US warehouse has made it much easier to own outside China.

ReefBot Lab — a different bet

Breadth and openness: 18+ parameters, running on the standard test kits (Salifert, Red Sea and others) you can buy at any local fish store — never waiting on a proprietary reagent shipment. No controller needed. The price includes shipping and duties: what’s on the page is what you pay.

If deep dosing automation around three or five parameters is your priority, a Trident on an Apex is a great system. If you want the widest picture of your water chemistry, with consumables you can pick up on a Saturday morning — that’s what we built ReefBot for.

Whichever way you go, your reef wins. That’s the part we care about.
